« 1. Contexte chronologique et géographique
Avec l'empire des Sassanides (224-651 de n. è.)
commence la dernière grande période de la culture
iranienne, sinon orientale ancienne, avant l'arrivée
des Arabes et de l'islam. D'un point de vue
chronologique, son histoire s'étend sur plus de quatre
siècles, de la victoire d'Ardashîr Ier sur le dernier
roi parthe Ardawân IV le 28 avril 224 à Hormizdagan
(mettant ainsi fin à un demi-millénaire de règne
arsacide), jusqu'à l'assassinat en 651 du dernier roi
des rois Yazdgerd III à Merw, la fuite de son fils
Peroz à la cour chinoise et l'arrivée des Arabes dans
le Chorassân. L'histoire sassanide se subdivise
communément en trois grandes périodes, que l'on
pourrait ainsi définir : stabilisation de l'empire et
confrontation avec Rome (3e-4e s.), persécutions
religieuses et invasions des Hephthalites (4e-5e s.),
apogée culturel et fin (6e-7e s.). »
